Child Errant 03:34
Child of delight with sunbright hair And seablue seadeep eyes, Sprite of bliss, what brings you here Beneath these cheerless skies? You should have stayed in endless spring Where day is never dim. Why, angel, has your erring wing Borne you down to weep with him? Emily Bronte, paraphrased

Castle Wood 06:07
Day is done, The winter sun is setting in its sullen sky, And drear the course That has been run, and dim the beams that slowly die. No star will light My coming night; no morn of hope for me will shine. I mourn not heaven Would blast my sight; I never longed for joys divine. The grief that pressed My aching breast was heavier far than earth can be; And who would dread Eternal rest when labor's hour was agony? No sighs for me, No sympathy, no wish to keep my soul below; The heart is dead In infancy, unwept for let the body go. Emily Bronte

We're still tied Your spit never dried Your pulse still in my hand Go do your thing you said but This ain't freed up space No no it's no clean slate Laboring in the chain I won't break Drawn down in you I'm done There'll be no other one For everything I said I'd do & never will I hope to keep a garment of my dying angel If I am noxious you can't be benign I have fits & you live like a swine Assessment I can stand but You will not tolerate The slightest censure of your ways Gonna rid yourself of the man who'll never match your wage You love our kids for sure And yourself even more For everything I said I'd do & etc. PJCF July 2023

Should've seen this coming Generation gap agape She'd like to keep it nice Hey, farewell is a casual vice No falser friend Ever smiled in vain At a specter of demise Standing in the rain Her poisoned dart Won't pin me – A green ghost in the shadow Of a bloodless maple tree (strophes 2&3 James Finn of Olympia, paraphrased)

Wading from the boat to shore You never wet your feet Shoulder-perched, waves before The nearing strand entreat Did not let go my hand When I set you down On the sifted sand Where we'd come aground. Beech leaves crisped winterlong Trembling on the twig Like the edges of the gouge Of a gutted thing Hooked and hung head down Flesh yet crawling Life's spasms lingering on It's appalling. Only want Stands between you & rot. PJCF March 2023

To Araby 05:51
When she finally spoke to me I was too confused to answer A short eternity I'd carried her icon with me Everywhere & everyday Lived in her image. Are you going to Araby she said It's going to be a splendid bazaar I wish I could go It's well for you But the convent school is on retreat that week. Round and round she turned her bracelet as she spoke And swayed a little side to side And I said If I go to Araby I will get you something If I go to Araby I will bring it back for you. It was late on closing night When I got to Araby No sorrier sight to see The place was deserted Every stall was closed Except for one The girl who worked it Talking drivel with two young men Acknowledging in time The aimless schoolboy brat, She asked me if I wanted Something I said no All was unmasked My fool's holy grail My wasted weeks of imbecilic fantasies A creature consumed and mocked by vanity With rage and frustration my eyes burned. If I go to Araby & etc. August 2023, based on James Joyce's "Araby" from Dubliners

You're unconscious when they operate You wake up and they say you did great What does that mean? Better to claw up in the dark & claim your station Falling ill is a prince's education Got the spins again Cannot return to how things were back when Or void the carcinogen When will I lay this burden down? I can hear them murmuring underground Got a sick mind in a sickly frame Cannot trust me, I give offense in all I say To the proffered cure I prefer the ache You'd rather pay to be affirmed that's how they got you trained Altered slothslain nutjobs on wellness bent Depressed on daddy's dime post their mutilation Such ameliorations' results are mixed And I'd rather die than have my psyche fixed Spayed world with tags for speech Such the winnings of the weak I never wanted to wear that dirty crown When will I lay & etc. PJCF September 2023

Adrift 07:18
Speaking in tongues In darkness to no one The Ironclad ticks in the night Clocks another year. Tread the dead every predawn promenade The used March snow crunching in senseless resent Cloudsigned moonset adrift in blood What was and is to come Night stretching on. I don't believe we are coming home Till we've burned it down Phoneblue kids with broken minds Fumbling for life's lookalike Mom & dad gonna take the reins Now that God has gone away Night stretching on. PJCF April 2023

about

The balance of harsh and elegant tips to the harsh in The Price of Admission, from its sludgy earth-mired grooves glimpses of the supernal. Distorted aggression and the acoustic caress. Lyrical departures are poems of the unfortunate Emily Bronte on tracks one and two, and a paraphrased kernel of James Joyce's Araby from Dubliners on track six: To Araby. The anguished Carcinogen finds no resolution in the foreboding final track, Adrift. The drive from Day of Wrath's rebirth in Skin Tirade through Brewkit & Polka Queen shatters the peace at this uneasy crossroads. A decrepit house, unlit, the door leaning from its stripped jambs – hinges screeching in the wind – with a note pinned thereto: For Madmen Only.

The Price of Admission: Your Mind (Hermann Hesse, Der Steppenwolf, 1927)
