about

There's a Renaissance lute piece on a similar ground except it's an open fifth rather than a minor seven. The concept was to go a while in that melancholy vein and then have the entire verse over an F major chord like a ray of light. It ended up more dappled but you can still hear the idea.

lyrics

Saw you walking with your cute kids how ya doin
You wondered had I heard that you were leaving in a day
For years I'd thought such things powerless to move me
Half the time I mix up your name with someone else

I never stepped off of my path for you
Not really something that I chose with full intent
Or that I asked you to play this role for me
You never chose to symbolize those I lost

Don't know how to approach the one I need
Life is lived so far from what's called reality
Either way you end up choosing emptiness
You're better off to seek it in your soul

I'd fantasize that when I died she'd meet me in a dream
There'd be a graveyard and we'd make out by a dead tree
She'd wake up cryin and wish she'd got to know me
So much cleaner than lowering my standards in real life

When you've got a roller coaster in your mind
You tend to live there all the time
You couldn't have done more to signal the light was green
I disbelieved my senses cause I'd decided it was red

Don't know how to approach the one I need
& etc.
