Why look? I spent much of September '21 sick in a cot in the loft and a bird found its way up there and sought escape at this big ancient barn window that doesn't open – sunlight, swaying trees, the muted songs of its winged brethren, every proof of emancipation in the square of light, yet this incomprehensible barrier threw the mystified bird back every time.
lyrics
Another bird trapped in the loft
got in yesterday
Goes for the square of light it sees
and strikes the glass
It's got a skyview, won't seek escape
in the stairway down;
Better the vision should repulse you
than that you turn away.
I throw myself at glimmers too
They parry when you close in
Another day of that I'm set to throw myself
Into the wall.
You climbed from my shitbox in your socks
with your shoes in hand
Wandered over, sat down in the dirt
to put them on
Well you never know how some mundane thing
might be perceived
I couldn't help myself I said you are beautiful
you said so are you.
Locked in the loft since then
Obsessed with a glint of freedom
The hinted promise teasing through your dirty glass
And throw myself into the windowpane.
